Google gave its September spam update up to two weeks to finish. The rollout started on 24 September at 09:15 Pacific time. Every earlier spam update this year was done in three days or less.
SpamBrain enforces six rules Google already had
The update does not add policies. It enforces existing ones. On the list: buying expired domains for their old links, publishing content at scale with no value, and renting space on a trusted site to third parties.
The rest covers doorway pages, back button hijacking and paid reviews passed off as honest. Google leans on SpamBrain, its machine learning spam system, to catch these.
March took 19 hours, September takes 14 days
The March update finished in about 19 and a half hours. June needed two days. August, which started on 18 August, took three.
Google has not said why this one runs so much longer. It is the fourth spam update of 2026.
Barry Schwartz says recovery runs into months
Search Engine Roundtable notes that sites hit by a spam update rarely bounce back fast. Google’s systems have to see the site meet policy again. That takes months, not days.
PPC Land adds that this update does not target links. Publishers already under pressure will still feel it, after Google referrals to publishers fell 40.2 percent.
Google will not say how many queries change
The company gave no share of affected searches. It gave no country breakdown either. Site owners are pointed at the spam policy documentation and left to check their own data.
Shops have seen this play out before, when German online shops lost 16.7 percent of organic visibility.
The open question is what the extra ten days buy Google. If the answer is a wider sweep of scaled content, the sites that publish in bulk will know by 8 October, when the two weeks run out.
