Google referrals to publishers fell 40.2% in a year. Direct and dark social grew

Chartbeat's September report shows search sending news sites less than half the readers it sent two years ago.

Chartbeat, an analytics firm used by news sites, published fresh numbers on 23 September. Google referrals to publishers fell 40.2% between July 2025 and July 2026. The same measure fell 21.9% the year before. The rate of decline almost doubled in twelve months.

Chartbeat measured 31.1 billion page views a month

The figures come from Chartbeat’s own network of client sites. It counted an average of 31.1 billion page views a month from January to July 2026. The data leans towards news publishers, so it does not describe every type of site.

Google Search now sends 5% of page views on that network. Two years ago it sent 9%. Google Discover, the news feed on Android phones, dropped 34.3% in a year. The year before it dropped 6.6%.

Dark social climbed from 7.1% to 11.3% of page views

Three ways in grew over the same two years. Dark social, which means links passed around in messages and private chats, went from 7.1% to 11.3%. Direct visits went from 13.5% to 15.9%. Clicks between pages on the sites themselves went from 37.9% to 40.4%.

Chartbeat expects referrals from AI assistants to grow about eight times over two years. Even then they stay small. A field study this month found AI Mode cut clicks to websites by 18.8 points. The hole search leaves is not being filled by chatbots.

Chartbeat tells newsrooms to stop planning around search

The report tells teams to treat search as one channel among several. It says staff and money should move to places a publisher can shape: newsletters, apps, home pages and messaging. It adds that a chatbot can answer a generic question outright, and then “that content is more exposed than your differentiated reporting is”.

The strain already shows in newsrooms. In Britain, Reach cut 220 editorial jobs and closed three titles after search traffic dropped.

Open your own traffic report and split the last two Julys by source. If search still sits above a third of your page views, that is the share to plan around before next summer.
