Former Wirtualna Polska chief Paweł Kapusta takes over Poland’s Rzeczpospolita daily

Paweł Kapusta became editor-in-chief of Rzeczpospolita and publishing director of Gremi Media on September 1, the first leadership change at the Polish business-and-politics daily since Grupa PTWP bought a controlling stake.

Gremi Media, publisher of Rzeczpospolita and the financial daily Parkiet, has named Paweł Kapusta editor-in-chief of Rzeczpospolita and publishing director of the company, effective September 1. He replaces Michał Szułdrzyński, who had run the newsroom since October 2024 and now becomes deputy editor-in-chief responsible for premium content, print editions and the paper’s subscription strategy.

Kapusta is one of the best-known figures in Polish digital media. He joined Wirtualna Polska, the country’s largest domestic news portal, in November 2016, led its sports service WP SportoweFakty and later the whole portal, leaving the top editorial job in January 2026. His career started at the football weekly Piłka Nożna, and he is the author of three reportage books, Agonia, Gad and Pandemia, and a winner of the Grand Press award as well as the Teresa Torańska prize.

The appointment merges editorial leadership with responsibility for the publishing business, a combination Gremi Media president Wojciech Kuśpik describes as the next phase of the group’s transformation. Grupa PTWP, a Katowice-based conference and trade-media company, acquired 56.82 percent of Gremi Media in December 2025, and the new structure is the clearest sign yet of how it intends to run its flagship asset.

Why it matters

Rzeczpospolita is Poland’s leading legal and business newspaper and one of the few national dailies with a functioning paid-digital model. Putting a portal editor in charge signals that PTWP expects growth to come from online reach and subscriptions rather than print, while Szułdrzyński’s new brief suggests the printed paper and premium journalism will be managed as a distinct product line. In his first statement, quoted by Wirtualne Media, Kapusta said his priority would be separating genuinely important news from information noise and strengthening original reporting.

Kapusta also inherits a title that competes directly with his former employer for business audiences. Wirtualna Polska has invested heavily in economic and political coverage in recent years, and Kapusta’s move takes detailed knowledge of that playbook to a rival with a stronger brand in premium content but a far smaller audience.

What’s next

Gremi Media has not announced further personnel changes, but the publisher says politics, economics, business and international affairs will remain the core of the offer, combining fast news with in-depth analysis. The first test of the new set-up will be how quickly the paper’s digital subscription numbers, which the company does not publish, respond to the portal-style approach Kapusta is expected to bring.
