TikTok Shop is opening British buyers to sellers based in eight European Union markets. The programme is called Sell to UK. A pilot for selected sellers starts on 21 September and the wider rollout follows on 19 October.

Pilot starts 21 September, wider rollout on 19 October

The eight markets are Poland, Belgium, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. Traffic will also run the other way: from 19 October, British sellers can reach buyers in the twelve countries of the Sell Across Europe network.

To join, a seller needs an active local TikTok Shop in one of the eight markets, sales in the past 30 days, an account in good standing and no large negative balance. Sellers on elevated-risk lists are excluded.

Sellers pick the courier and have seven working days to ship

Shipping runs on Ship by Seller. The seller chooses the carrier, pays for delivery and answers customer questions when a parcel goes missing. The parcel has to be handed over within seven working days of order confirmation.

That is the part worth pricing before signing up. A cross-border parcel to Britain costs more than a domestic one, and post-Brexit customs paperwork sits with the seller. A brand that has not worked out its landed cost will discover it in the margin.

Returns need a UK address or a refund without the parcel

Sellers must either hold a returns address in the United Kingdom or use the option to refund a buyer without asking for the product back. Both cost money. The second one also invites abuse on low-value items, which is why many sellers cap it by price.

British online retail is getting more crowded at the same time. Primark, a chain that avoided online selling for years, confirmed home delivery in Great Britain earlier this month.

TikTok counts 300,000 small businesses on the UK market

TikTok says more than 300,000 small businesses already sell through TikTok Shop in Britain, that the platform carries about 6,000 live streams a day there, and that sales from live streams grew 55 percent in a year. The figures come from TikTok and no outside body has checked them. The shop has run in the United Kingdom for close to five years.

For a brand, the decision is narrower than the announcement suggests. Live selling needs someone on camera several times a week, in English, with British prices and British delivery promises. Sellers who cannot staff that are better off watching how Sephora runs monthly product drops on TikTok Shop, or how YouTube Shopping opened in Poland with Allegro, before committing budget.
