Instacart launched a white-label AI shopping assistant for other retailers on 9 September, along with Clementine, its own assistant on the Instacart app. Advertising is due in both by the end of 2026.

Food Bazaar, Woodman’s and Heritage Grocers are live already

The white-label product is called Cart Assistant. A supermarket chain drops it into its own website or app through Instacart’s Storefront Pro platform, then renames it, recolours it and connects its loyalty scheme and recipes. The shopper never sees the Instacart brand.

Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group and Woodman’s have it running. Aldi US, Harmon’s, The Save Mart Companies and Stew Leonard’s are listed as coming. Heritage Grocers built Spanish-language support with Instacart, which matters for a chain serving Hispanic shoppers.

What the assistant does is ordinary and useful: it finds deals, reorders what someone bought before, and builds a basket from a photo of a handwritten shopping list.

Clementine turns a request into a basket on Instacart’s own app

Clementine is the consumer-facing version, live on the Instacart marketplace in the United States and Canada. Someone types “budget-friendly kid lunches” or “high-protein easy dinners” and gets a filled cart rather than a list of links.

Both products sit on the same foundation: 1.6 billion past orders, a catalogue of 2 billion items and live stock data from roughly 100,000 stores across North America. That inventory link is the hard part, and it is why a supermarket might rent this rather than build it.

Ali Miller says ads arrive by the end of 2026

Ali Miller, who runs advertising at Instacart, said the company wants “to learn first what’s resonating with consumers at scale” before putting ads inside the assistants. Both will carry advertising by the end of the year, following the route Kroger took with its own assistant.

That is the real product here. A shopping assistant that builds the basket decides which brand goes in it, and a sponsored slot inside that decision is worth more than a banner beside it. Retail media has been moving in this direction all year, and Ace Hardware wiring weather triggers into its network is the same idea in a simpler form.

Instacart keeps more data for itself than it gives OpenAI

Instacart already plugs into outside chatbots, with ChatGPT from late 2025 and Claude from April 2026. Chief commercial officer Ryan Hamburger drew the line plainly: the company does not share the same level of data with OpenAI as with an assistant living on its own platform.

Adoption is still early. Gartner’s Greg Carlucci notes shoppers hesitate to hand over the final checkout, and generative chatbot use among multi-brand retailers stands at 21% this year against 5% last year.

What a brand should fix before the assistants carry ads

When software picks the basket, the shelf you have to win is a database row. Product titles, sizes, allergens, images and stock status decide whether an assistant offers your jar or the one next to it.

So the practical work is unglamorous: clean product feeds at every chain you sell through, watch which retailers switch Cart Assistant on, and ask their retail media teams now what a sponsored placement inside an assistant will cost and how it will be labelled. Campbell’s has already moved 85% of its working media into social, creators and ecommerce, which is where this fight happens.
