Google AdSense will stop counting ads that never appear on the screen

Google is switching AdSense to begin-to-render counting on 17 February 2027. Ads that download but never appear will stop counting.

Google is changing the way AdSense counts ad views. From 17 February 2027 an ad will count only when it has started to appear on the screen. Until now AdSense counted an ad as soon as the browser began to download it. Publishers should expect smaller numbers in their reports.

Google counts an AdSense view only after the ad starts to draw

The new method is called begin-to-render. It means the ad is counted once it starts to be drawn on the screen of the person reading the page. Google says an impression will count when the ad “has successfully loaded and started to render” (quote after Search Engine Land, English). Many people close a page before the ad shows up. Those views counted before. From February 2027 they will not.

The switch happens on 17 February 2027

Google sent the notice to AdSense publishers on 1 September 2026, PPC Land reported. The same switch applies to Google Ad Manager, the tool bigger publishers use to sell space on their sites. Google points to 12 August 2026 as the earliest sensible date for comparing old reports with new ones. That leaves publishers about five months to get ready.

Google has not said what happens to publisher payouts

The notice says nothing about money. In 2018 Google made a similar change and stated plainly that earnings would not move. This time there is no such sentence, according to PPC Land. Advertisers may pay for fewer views that people actually saw. Publishers may keep the same income spread over fewer views, or they may earn less. Nobody knows yet.

Advertiser tools moved to the same method back in 2025

Google’s tools for buyers, Display & Video 360 and Campaign Manager 360, already count this way since 2025. The tools for publishers follow more than a year later. That gap often made a buyer’s report and a publisher’s report disagree. Dropping it should make the two sides easier to match.

For marketers the practical effect is simple. Any report that crosses 17 February 2027 will mix two counting methods. So it is worth marking that date in yearly comparisons and asking media partners which method a number comes from. The wider fight over how Google’s advertising machine works is still running: a US court recently ordered changes to Google’s ad exchange without breaking it up. Measurement rules keep moving too, as Snap showed when it opened its attribution tool worldwide.
