Google puts a chat agent inside YouTube ads. The beta is US only for now

Google is testing a conversational agent inside YouTube ads that answers product questions in the ad itself.

Google announced a set of shopping changes on 16 September 2026, and the one advertisers will feel first sits inside YouTube ads. A conversational agent will answer product questions in the ad itself. Ashish Gupta, who runs merchant shopping at Google, published the list on the company blog.

The agent answers product questions without leaving the video

Google calls the feature Business Agent. A viewer watching a YouTube ad can ask about the product and get an answer on the spot. Nobody has to open a new tab. The test is a beta, it runs in the United States only, and brands have to sign up for it. Google gave no date for other markets.

Cart handover reaches Australia and Canada in early 2027

The second change is plumbing. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol is a shared way for shops and AI tools to talk about carts and payment. It now moves a full cart across to the shop’s own site. Merchants can also test their checkout flow and read analytics from it. The rollout starts in the United States. Australia and Canada follow in early 2027. Google says the protocol already covers hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers.

Google says good feed work lifts sales by 5 percent

Three new fields land in the product feed. A video link field feeds shoppable formats. Conversational fields add context a model can read back. Loyalty fields show member prices and perks. Google says merchants who follow its feed advice see conversion rise by 5 percent. In tests with lululemon, it says the conversational fields were used about half the time.

Google keeps stacking these up. It has switched on share-of-voice reporting for AI answers and opened a bidding beta that reads product value from the feed. All three lean on the same file. Mastercard, for its part, expects 300 million people to shop through agents.

Retailers outside the United States wait another year

American retailers on the protocol get the cart handover now. Australia and Canada wait until early 2027, and Google has named no date at all for Europe. Shops with a thin feed lose twice over. No video field means no shoppable format. No loyalty field means no member price shown next to the product.
