Google opens AI Mode monitoring to all users worldwide. Free accounts get it too

Google turned on AI Mode monitoring for every Search user worldwide on 28 September. Until then the feature sat behind the paid Ultra and Pro plans.

Google turned on AI Mode monitoring for every Search user worldwide on 28 September. Robby Stein, vice president of product for Search, set out the change. Until then the feature sat behind the paid Ultra and Pro plans.

Robby Stein says Search will keep checking pages for you

You tell AI Mode what to watch. Search then returns to pages, forums, social posts and live data feeds and checks whether anything moved. The Google app sends an alert when it did. In his post Stein wrote that Search will “continuously check across changing info on the web”. AI Mode also offers to start a watch while you search, so a user can set one without knowing the feature exists.

Back-in-stock alerts and price drops are Google’s own examples

Google names its Shopping Graph among the sources it checks, and puts that index at more than 60 billion products. Two of the examples in the announcement are shopping ones: a back-in-stock alert and a price drop. A shopper who sets either of those has no reason to reopen the shop’s page. The rest are local, such as a new restaurant or pop-up nearby, or holiday things to do with children.

Google has not said how often an alert carries a link

Neither the announcement nor the trade write-ups say how often a monitoring alert will link out to a shop or a publisher. Search Engine Journal made that point on 29 September. Measurement does not help much here, because Google says a position in Search Console tells you little about AI answers. Field work published earlier found that AI Mode cut clicks to websites by 18.8 points.

The answers now run on Gemini 3.8 Flash inside AI Mode, so speed is no longer the limit on how often Search can recheck a page. One question decides how much monitoring is worth to a retailer: does the alert arrive with a link to the shop, or with the answer alone? Google’s holiday commerce updates, promised for later this year, are the next place that could show up.
