X, the platform once known as Twitter, will pay its creators in the United States only through X Money from 2 September 2026. X Money is the company’s own payments service. TechCrunch, Social Media Today and PYMNTS reported the change, which takes effect at once.
The switch covers two ways people earn on X: the Original Content Rewards programme, which pays for posts, and paid subscriptions. Until now the payments company Stripe handled these payouts. United States creators no longer have a choice and must set up an X Money account to be paid.
Stripe paid about every two weeks with a $30 minimum
Under Stripe, X sent money roughly every two weeks, and a creator had to earn at least $30 before the cash moved. X says X Money removes both limits. In the company’s words, “you’ll have access to your payouts the moment they’re sent.” Creator earnings are a growing pot, and payment platform Later recently said its payouts to creators passed $300 million.
X Money adds a 1099-NEC form and W-9 paperwork
The new system also brings United States tax admin. X will send a 1099-NEC form to individual creators and collect a W-9 from those who work through a limited company. Creators outside the United States are not affected for now and keep using Stripe. The change lands while brands still admit that creator fees are guesswork.
Payouts feed X Money’s 6% interest perk for Premium
The move pulls creators deeper into X’s own money system. Payouts count toward the direct-deposit rules that unlock a higher savings rate inside X Money, 6% for people who pay for X Premium against 4% for everyone else. On 7 September X will also close its older Creator Revenue Sharing programme and move those users to Original Content Rewards. Money is now central to how platforms hold creators, much as some brands skip ads and hand a creator a $1 million stunt instead.
