Desigual has made opposition to AI the message of its new campaign. The Spanish clothing label started Born to Disobey on 8 September. The film stars Vivian Wilson, a 22 year old model and activist, alongside a broken robot called DESI84 that is played by an actor rather than made by a computer.
The robot is a costume, and that is the whole point
A brand attacking AI cannot make its ad with AI. So DESI84 is a suit worn by a performer, with no computer graphics and no generated footage. The directing trio behind the film is PSG: Yukihiro Shoda, Pau Lopez and Gerardo del Hierro. The work runs on Instagram and YouTube.
Wilson says AI removes intention from art
Wilson gives two reasons for the stance. AI takes work away from creative people, and the computing behind it is bad for the environment. On the creative side she puts it like this: art is emotion through expression, and a model replaces intention with “plagiarized colors and shapes”.
Casting Elon Musk’s daughter guarantees pick-up
Wilson is the daughter of Elon Musk, who owns one of the largest AI companies. Putting her in an anti-AI film for a fashion brand made the campaign a news story within hours, and entertainment titles covered it before the trade press did. That is the reach the casting bought.
The risk sits in the same place. A campaign carried by a family story can end up being read as a family story, and the clothes disappear from the conversation.
Refusing AI is turning into a positioning of its own
Desigual is not alone. Several advertisers now say out loud that their work was made by people, because brands are selling humanity as distrust of AI grows. Others go the other way and build whole campaigns with models, as the Towarowa22 project in Warsaw did.
If you plan to take this position, one rule holds. Check every asset first, including social cutdowns, retouching and voice work. A brand that attacks AI and then ships one generated frame loses the argument in a day. And write the claim in a way the legal team can defend, because “no AI” is a promise about production, not a slogan.
