Google Discover will recommend AI-generated content, job ads show

Four Google job ads describe AI agents that write content for Discover. The feed has more than 500 million daily users.

Google wants its Discover feed to recommend articles that AI has written. The plan shows up in four job ads on Google’s careers site, which Search Engine Journal reported on 11 October. Discover, the article feed in the Google app and on Android phones, has more than 500 million daily users, one of the ads says.

Google’s Discover team builds agents that write content

The clearest wording sits in an ad for a Staff ML Engineer in Mountain View. It says the Discover Feed Recommendation team “leads by recommending AI-generated content (AIGC)” to match what users like. The engineer would build agentic flows, meaning AI systems that carry out tasks step by step on their own. Their job is to create content for Discover and for phone notifications. The same ad lists checks for facts, freshness, coherence and tone. Pay is set at $207,000 to $300,000 a year, plus bonus and shares.

A second ad looks for a senior engineer to run quality control on AI-generated content in the feed. A third, for a design lead in Mountain View or New York, wants to turn Discover into “a proactive, hyper-personalized concierge experience”. The same ad asks the hire to keep “human voices and sources” at the centre. It also names experience with “creator/publisher value exchanges” as a plus. None of the ads says how much of the feed AI content would fill, when it would start or in which countries.

Discover already shows AI previews in the US, South Korea and India

Google has moved this way before. In October 2025 it added AI previews of trending topics to Discover in three countries, each with links to web pages. In September 2026 Robby Stein, Google’s vice president of product for Search, said the company was testing a “Dive deeper” button with AI topic summaries.

The feed already sends fewer readers out. Chartbeat data from September showed Discover referrals to news sites fell 34.3% in a year. All Google referrals fell 40.2% over the same period.

Search Console counts Discover AI impressions, not clicks

Search Console has a generative AI report for Discover. It counts how often a site’s links appear inside Discover’s AI features, by page, country and date. It shows impressions only. Sites with few impressions may not see the report at all. One setting, the Search generative AI control, covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and the AI features in Discover. Switching it off removes a site’s links and text from all three.

Open that report this week and put its impressions next to your normal Discover clicks for the same pages. If AI impressions climb while clicks stay flat, Discover is showing your work without sending the reader to you.
