DAZN more than tripled its streaming time in Germany in September. Viewers watched about 14.6 million hours on the sports service, up 215% on August, according to AGF Videoforschung data published on 8 October. The start of the Bundesliga and Champions League season drove the jump.
AGF is the body that measures video viewing for German broadcasters and advertisers. This summer it began publishing monthly figures for streaming platforms, covering both total viewing hours and reach. DWDL and Horizont both reported the September numbers.
DAZN reached 3.3 million people, ahead of Sky and Wow
DAZN’s monthly reach rose 76% to 3.3 million people aged three and over. That put it ahead of Sky with 2.0 million and its sister streaming service Wow with 2.1 million. On an average day, about 348,000 people used DAZN, up 130%.
Wow, Sky’s streaming service for films, series and sport, lost 5.8% of its viewing time. Sky’s own platform gained 11.8%.
Amazon leads on hours, ARD Mediathek on reach
Amazon’s Prime Video recorded the most viewing: 125.8 million hours, up 1.3%. Among people aged 14 to 49, a group advertisers often buy, its hours grew 13.7%. ARD Mediathek, the public broadcaster’s streaming site, followed with 106.2 million hours, up 16.1%.
On reach the order changes. ARD Mediathek reached 26.2 million people in September. ZDF’s streaming portal reached 19.4 million, down 5.2%. Amazon reached 18.9 million. The commercial players RTL+ and Joyn each reached about 11 million. RTL+ grew its viewing time by 10.9% to 64.6 million hours.
Arte and KiKa lost viewing time in September
Not every service grew. Arte’s viewing time fell 12.8% and the children’s channel KiKa’s fell 12.0%. The news site ntv.de lost 5.9% of its reach. RTL, which aired an AI-made court show on its channels this year, was among the winners with RTL+.
For sports advertisers, DAZN’s 3.3 million monthly reach now sits in the same AGF system as linear TV. Buyers who also weigh newer offers, such as Netflix’s ad plan coming to nine more European countries, can set it against a monthly figure that rose 76% in one month of football.
