The Laughing Cow drops its smile in 4,700 US stores. Bel says she will smile again
Bel Brands USA replaced The Laughing Cow’s smile with a frown on Creamy Original packs in more than 4,700 stores, and sent shoppers to a site called TheNotLaughingCow.com.

Bel Brands USA has taken the smile off The Laughing Cow. Select packs of Creamy Original wedges now carry a serious, frowning cow. Fox Business reported the change on 22 September 2026. The packs are in more than 4,700 stores across the continental United States.
The face has looked the same way for more than a hundred years. Shoppers noticed within days.

The pack carries a code that opens a site built for the campaign. The page says the cow has stopped laughing and that she needs to talk. Short films show her alone in a diner booth and on a park swing. Bel has not said what she is unhappy about.
Jamee Pearlstein says a serious cow makes people look
Bel’s US cheese marketing chief told reporters why the brand went quiet. “So when she suddenly gets serious, you pay attention,” she said, as quoted by Fox Business. Campaign reported on 25 September that the brand is staying vague about how long the silence lasts.
The cow goes back to smiling once Bel explains
Bel confirmed the change is temporary. The old face returns when the brand reveals the point of it. No agency has been credited and no date has been given. That puts the whole campaign on shoppers noticing a face they stopped looking at years ago.
Packaging carries the message instead of a media buy
A mascot change is cheaper than a launch campaign and travels on its own. It also sits on the shelf where the buying decision happens. Brands have been reworking their core identity all year, from Formula E ahead of its Gen4 car to Novo Nordisk dropping half its name. Those were full redesigns. This one removes a single line from a drawing.
The packs are on shelves now, the answer is not
Shoppers can find the frowning wedges in more than 4,700 stores today. Bel says the smile comes back after the reveal and has set no date for it. Anyone tracking the brand should watch TheNotLaughingCow.com rather than the trade press, because that is where the answer lands first.
