YouTube will cut the reach of channels that repost barely changed Shorts

Voice-overs, small edits and bulk templates will not count as original work. YouTube gave no start date.

YouTube Shorts reach is about to shrink for channels that mostly re-upload clips made by other people. Rene Ritchie, YouTube’s creator liaison, said so in a video on the Creator Insider channel on 1 October 2026. The recommendation system will favour original Shorts instead.

Rene Ritchie lists edits YouTube will not count as original

Ritchie named three kinds of change that are not enough. A voice-over that only describes what is on screen does not count. Neither do small technical edits, or the same template applied to many clips at once.

What does count is a creator’s own commentary, analysis or storytelling. YouTube’s monetization rules already say that borrowed material has to be changed “significantly to make it your own”.

Channels that switch to original work can recover. According to Ritchie, the system “will re-evaluate reach” once a channel changes course. He did not say how long that takes.

YouTube gives no date and no reach report

The announcement leaves gaps. There is no start date. There is also no screen in YouTube Studio that tells a creator whether their reach was cut.

The change covers recommendations, not payments. Monetization still follows the separate reused-content policy. Relevant Audience notes that the update talks about Shorts only. It does not say what happens to creators who clip their own long videos.

For sharing someone else’s video, YouTube points to the Posts tab. There, viewers are sent to the original upload.

Brands that recycle creator clips on YouTube are exposed

Instagram and Facebook already limit the reach of aggregator accounts. YouTube is now doing the same for its short format, months after it announced typed editing for Shorts.

The risk is not limited to meme pages. Some brand channels fill their Shorts feed with cut-downs of creator content from paid deals. If those clips carry no new commentary, they may now reach fewer people. Brands that hand campaigns to creators can avoid this by posting from the creator’s own channel.

One check is worth doing this week. Open YouTube Studio, sort Shorts by views, and compare reposted clips with original ones over the next month. A gap that opens after 1 October is the first sign the change has reached your channel.
