Tim Cook’s last memo as Apple CEO leans on culture and Steve Jobs, echoing his 2011 debut

Apple's outgoing chief sent staff a farewell note on August 31 before John Ternus took over, thanking employees and invoking Jobs. Ternus answered with his own memo the next morning. Both leaked within hours.

Tim Cook closed 15 years as Apple’s chief executive the way he opened them: with an all-staff email. On August 31, his final day in the job, Cook sent employees a farewell memo that credited them for the company’s success, praised his successor John Ternus and told staff that he was not leaving Apple, only stepping away from a role he had loved deeply. Ternus became CEO on September 1 and Cook moved to executive chairman.

The note, first published by 9to5Mac and picked up by MacRumors, is short on business detail and long on identity. Cook wrote that Apple had made it possible to leave a dent in the universe, borrowing Steve Jobs’ phrase, and summed up his management philosophy in four words: “Culture triumphs over everything.” He also posted publicly that his title would change but his affection for the Apple community would not.

Ternus, who joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and ran hardware engineering before his promotion, replied with his own memo on the morning of September 1. He described Cook as a leader who acted on his values with decency and humanity, said he was honored to run what he called the greatest company in the world, and pointed staff to the product event scheduled for September 9. The same message confirmed that Johny Srouji takes on a new chief hardware officer role and that engineer Laura Legros has returned to the company.

Why it matters

For internal communicators the two memos are a matched pair worth studying. Cook’s letter deliberately mirrors the one he sent on August 29, 2011, when he took over from a dying Jobs and promised employees that the founder’s culture was in Apple’s DNA. As Fast Company notes, both letters invoke Jobs, stress continuity, stay optimistic and reassure staff that the departing boss is not disappearing. The handover was choreographed well beyond email: a farewell gathering for around 200 people on August 23 featured a performance by OneRepublic.

The choice of Ternus, a product engineer rather than an operations specialist, is itself a message to a workforce that has spent a decade hearing about supply chains and services revenue. Ternus’s first memo was built around products already in development and ideas not yet realized, a deliberate contrast with Cook’s operational brand.

What’s next

Cook’s chairman role reportedly centers on government relations, including Washington and Beijing, which keeps the company’s most experienced political operator in place while Ternus concentrates on the September 9 launch. That both memos reached the press within hours is no accident either: at a company of Apple’s size, an all-hands email is a public statement with an internal audience, and it was written accordingly.
