Groupe Le Monde has seen no sudden audience drop since Google’s AI Overviews reached France in July 2026, CEO Louis Dreyfus said on September 8. In an interview with French trade site INfluencia he said Le Monde gained 24,000 new subscribers a month in July and August. Search Engine Journal picked up the interview on September 10.
Le Monde added 24,000 subscribers a month in July and August 2026
“We have not seen a sudden drop in our audiences,” Dreyfus told INfluencia. Mobile apps brought 36% of the group’s total traffic in August 2026. Le Monde in English grew traffic 7% in the first half of 2026 compared with a year earlier. The group’s videos recorded 160 million views on YouTube in July. Other group titles are growing too. Courrier International has 86,000 digital subscribers, up 7%. Télérama has 60,000, up 24%.
ChatGPT referrals convert 26 times better than Facebook, Dreyfus says
Dreyfus said visitors who arrive from ChatGPT convert to a subscription 26 times better than visitors from Facebook. Against Google Discover the multiple is 260. Le Monde has licensing deals with OpenAI since March 2024, with Perplexity since May 2025 and with Meta since December 2025. A quarter of the revenue from those deals goes to the newsroom. Dreyfus described AI summaries as teasers for the full article.
APIG complaint cites Arcom estimate of 33-38% traffic loss
Publisher groups see a different picture. Google launched AI Overviews in France on July 22, 2026, according to Minted. Three weeks later the publishers’ alliance APIG filed a complaint with the French competition authority. APIG cites an estimate from media regulator Arcom that AI Overviews cut publisher traffic by 33-38% in European markets.
Top 50 French news sites lost 17% of traffic in August
Data from Mind, cited by Minted, show the top 50 ACPM-certified French news sites lost 17% of traffic in August 2026 versus August 2025. ACPM is the French body that audits media circulation and traffic. Some thematic sites on health, food and cars are down about 40% since July 22. Florent Rimbert, who works on digital development at APIG, said no massive impact has shown up so far. He said AI Overviews hit evergreen content more than breaking news. Jean-Paul Dietsch, director general of ACPM, said September data will tell more.
For marketers, the Le Monde numbers are a counterpoint to the traffic-collapse story that shapes how publishers sell ads and negotiate AI deals. A publisher that sells ads should separate AI referrals from Google search in its analytics and report both. An advertiser should ask publishers for conversion data by source, not raw visits. Brands talking to AI companies about content deals can use the Le Monde multiples as a reference point. The September figures from ACPM will show whether Le Monde is an exception or the rule.
