Howard Stern takes his SiriusXM show to HBO Max as live schedule shrinks to one day a week

HBO Max will stream a filmed weekly edition of The Howard Stern Show from September 17, while Stern cuts his live SiriusXM broadcast to Mondays only. It is the first time the show has been sold to a streaming platform.

Warner Bros. Discovery, SiriusXM and The Howard Stern Production Company have agreed a deal under which a filmed, edited version of Stern’s satellite radio program will appear on HBO Max every Thursday, beginning September 17 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time. The episodes will be released globally wherever the service operates and will be packaged with periodic extras.

The move coincides with a sharp change in Stern’s own workload. When his new season starts on September 14, the live show will air on SiriusXM only on Mondays instead of several days a week. Inside Radio reports that the studio has been rigged with 40 cameras so that the HBO Max cut can be assembled from the Monday broadcast, with regulars Robin Quivers, Fred Norris and Gary Dell’Abate on screen alongside Stern’s musician and celebrity guests.

SiriusXM is reshaping the rest of its Stern offering at the same time. The Howard 101 channel is being retired, Howard 100 gains an expanded “Wrap Up Wednesday” hosted by Dell’Abate and Jon Hein, and a new “Howard Stern Decades” section in the SiriusXM app will offer on-demand archive material from the 1980s through the 2010s. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, said Stern “has always been in a category of his own.”

Why it matters

For SiriusXM the deal answers a question that has hung over the company since it renewed Stern’s contract in December 2025 through 2028: how to keep monetizing its most famous host as he steps back. A single live day paired with archive programming lowers production cost while HBO Max distribution puts the brand in front of audiences who have never paid for satellite radio. Scott Greenstein, SiriusXM’s president and chief content officer, framed the arrangement as the start of a new season rather than a wind-down.

For WBD, the show is inexpensive weekly talk content at a moment when streamers are chasing the video podcast audience that YouTube and Spotify have built. Stern, now 72, told the announcement that for years his SiriusXM show had offered only brief video glimpses and that HBO persuaded him to open up the whole production.

What’s next

The first HBO Max episode lands three days after the season opener on SiriusXM. Neither company has disclosed the financial terms or whether the streaming episodes will carry advertising, and HBO Max has not said how long the arrangement runs. Given Stern’s radio deal ends in 2028, the streaming partnership looks designed to run in parallel with it.
