ChatGPT adds virtual try-on for clothes. It needs a selfie and a full-body photo

OpenAI has added a Try on button to clothing listings in ChatGPT. It turns a selfie into a picture of the shopper wearing the item.

OpenAI added a “Try on” button, a virtual try-on for clothing and accessory listings, to ChatGPT on 1 October 2026. A shopper taps it, takes or uploads a selfie, and ChatGPT Images draws them wearing the item. The feature is rolling out in the mobile apps and on the web, according to the ChatGPT release notes.

ChatGPT keeps the selfie as a reference photo

After the first try-on, ChatGPT stores the picture as a reference photo for later use. Users can change or delete it under Settings, Personalization, Reference photos. Engadget reports that the tool asks for a full-body photo as well as a selfie. It adds that images from personal accounts can be used to train models unless the user opts out.

Engadget also found that the button is not tied to products ChatGPT suggests. Any screenshot of clothing a user uploads can, in theory, become a try-on image. OpenAI’s notes do not list countries, plans or age limits.

OpenAI adds a Library for saved products

The same update lets users save any product to Favorites or sort finds into folders in the ChatGPT Library. Search Engine Roundtable points out that Google has offered virtual try-on in its own shopping results several times before. OpenAI is now building the same habit inside a chat window.

The try-on sits next to tools OpenAI already sells to merchants. ChatGPT shows product listings, and ChatGPT Shopping picks products mostly from feeds that shops send in. Ads in the chat are also growing: ChatGPT ads now reach 43% of eligible US users.

Fashion retailers compete on product photos inside ChatGPT

A try-on image is only as good as the product picture behind it. Retailers whose feeds carry one small, cluttered photo give the model little to work with. Clean images on a plain background, shown from the front, give it more. Some sellers are already rebuilding their catalogues for AI shoppers, as JD Sports did with its product search.

Returns will show whether the button changes anything. OpenAI has not said how many people used it or whether they bought more. Retailers that already get orders from ChatGPT can compare return rates for those orders with other channels over the next weeks, starting from the clothing lines with the clearest photos.
