DoorDash admits it screwed up. Its New York settlement costs $131.5 million

Most underpaid couriers were short by a dollar or less, yet the New York settlement runs to $131.5 million.

Most of the underpaid couriers were short by a dollar or less. The average gap came to $7.70, yet the total bill runs to nine figures.

New York fined DoorDash $16.7 million on top of the back pay

The $131.5 million splits three ways. The largest piece, $83 million, settles a fight over how on-call time between deliveries is counted. Another $12.3 million covers pay that arrived late or never arrived. The rest, $16.7 million, is a fine paid to the city department.

Most Dashers were short by a dollar or less

The city traced about $6.6 million in missing payments and $5.7 million in late ones. Delays ran from days to weeks. Around 209,000 couriers were affected, out of roughly 264,000 in the deal.

Sixty-five percent were short by a dollar or less. Even so, every affected courier gets at least $10. The median payment lands near $48.

DoorDash skipped the legal wording in its statement

Company statements usually talk about irregularities and remediation. This one opens with “we screwed up” and does not soften it. The firm blames software bugs, unusual delivery situations and incomplete bank details.

The apology arrives with a number attached, which is rarer. Converse apologised for its Chuck 70 ad and pulled it, but had nothing to pay out. Callaway pledged $1 million after its own ad backlash and then argued with its partner about who was at fault.

Mayor Mamdani ties the deal to paying workers on time

New York mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani said a worker who earns a wage should be paid on time and in full. The city’s minimum pay rules for delivery couriers took effect in 2023.

DoorDash says it has fixed the bank detail checks and strengthened its compliance work. It also dropped its own method for counting on-call time and moved to the city’s. The company already sells ad space inside other retailers’ apps, including weather-triggered campaigns with Ace Hardware.

The bill works out near $500 for each of the 264,000 couriers covered, and the fine alone is more than the back pay. A statement that names the mistake cost less than the three years of billing errors behind it.
